I’m Not Slut-Shaming Harley, But…

This is an infuriatingly common phrase. Especially since Harley Quinn’s role in Suicide Squad. It’s permeated dozens of reviews, and have I ever got a rant for it.

A possibly less than logical rant, but possibly one to inspire better bloggers to remold it into something useful.

Note before I plunge right in. I dress very conservatively myself. I’m half convinced I walked out of the 1940’s, except that there was not Harley Quinn in that era. So this is not a defense of my lifestyle; it’s an attack of an utterly stupid saying.

And off we go.

BUT…

Ah, the infamous but. “With all due respect, but…”. “I don’t believe in blank, but…”. “I’m not slut-shaming Harley Quinn, but…”.

If you ever fond yourself giving this phrase, follow up that but with a pride-shattering “I actually am” and then find a new argument.

ANY WOMAN CAN DRESS HOWEVER SHE WANTS, BUT HARLEY QUINN DOESN’T GET A SAY IN HOW SHE WAS CREATED

Well gosh diddly darn! And all this time I thought all comic book characters created themselves and made their own clothing decisions.

This is ridiculous. Of course she doesn’t get a say; she’s a character. And she’s a character designed to be the way she is.

You may think it’s wrong that Harley is often sexualized, but it’s integral to who she is. Whether or not that’s bad is your decision. Slut shame or don’t. Don’t follow up with a but.

I dislike so much how people go against Harley for her attire, but it’s the iconic CHARACTER. Jesus Christ. The thing is, no matter what she wears, they will ***** about it (pardon the french). But, honestly, if she has more clothes, they’ll say that they’re not allowing her to BE the woman she was created to be, but if you dress her correctly in correlation with the comics then she’s a slutty ***??? Yeah, okay. -Megara

EVEN MARGOT ROBBIE WAS UNCOMFORTABLE

Correct. Margot stated that he herself would not dress that way, but also stated that it’s part of what makes Harley Quinn  who she is.

IT’S DEMEANING TO WOMEN

You know what’s also demeaning? Saying that wearing less clothing makes you no more than eye candy in a movie. By saying that undressing Harley demeans her, you say that women who choose to dress like that demean themselves.

If you put her in too many clothes, then she’s prude. If you don’t put enough, then she’s a slut. You can’t win either way. -Anon Friend

Congrats.

BUT….

If you personally feel uncomfortable with what Harley wears, I GET IT. If you feel morally against it, THAT IS OKAY.

But please. No more wishy-washy half-baked “but…”s in an attempt to seem progressive. Attempt your opinion. Own your opinion. Be bold in it.

Harley Quinn deserves better than a but.
